A little about myself and my money journey

Hey everyone! Welcome to my blog! Let me tell you a bit about myself. I am in my 40s, work in corporate America and I immigrated to the US in my 20s. I came here to pursue an MBA and then for the many years been working hard at rising the ranks in corporate America.

For most of my adult life, I was obsessed with my career and rising up the ranks in my company. Despite my business background, I was anything but financially savvy. My money philosophy was – “Hey, I make all this money, I deserve to spend it!” I had no concept of money management and my wife called me a spender. A few years ago, my wife decided to take an overseas trip with her sister and cousin and left me all alone in the house with my 2 kids for a week. But as serendipitous as this sounds, I found myself putting the kids to bed early and doing some random online reading. I stumbled into the world of personal finance by accident and got fascinated by what I started reading.

What followed was nothing short of a transformation and a journey. I was captivated by reading all the different blogs & listening to podcasts. I systematically started working on our finances and started organizing the different concepts and thoughts in my head. As I explained all this to my wife to get her on board, what struck us the most was that we could create so many more choices for ourselves if we worked toward become financially independent and my life could be a lot more than simply working my way up the corporate ladder. Don’t get me wrong – my wife and I both love our jobs but who knows that will always be the case? I worked aggressively to cut all our unnecessary spending and investing our money wisely. I became a real estate investor and loved learning all about real estate and managing it.

Then, in 2020, in the midst of the worst pandemic of our lives, I started writing some articles sharing my thoughts about personal finance & I noticed people were feeling very motivated to learn about this. That was the inception of this blog – for the rest of the year, I kept writing the articles & putting them on a google drive, sharing it with friends and family. Eventually, I decided I need to start putting this in a blog as it was getting very clunky to share my google drive with people.

Money can be simple…

This is simply the underlying theme of this blog. I observed being considered financially savvy was perceived to be for wall street geniuses – and nothing can be farther from the truth! As I started talking to friends, I realized I need to help people understand money does not have to be that difficult – it can be simple. At least if you want it to be. You can make it very complicated but there is no need to. There are a number of blogs out there that share a lot of good information but because there is so much out there, it overwhelms people. So I want to demystify and simplify personal finance for you – and make it approachable.

This blog can be for anyone wanting to improve their financial knowledge. However, since I write from my personal experiences, most of my information can be useful for primarily early to mid career (20s through 40s) folks. Finally, you will hear me say this – personal finance is personal. So every person’s journey is unique and you will never find any judgment in this blog. I aim to offer balanced approaches and ultimately it is up to you to decide the best path.

I am not a financial advisor, not a CPA, CFA…I am merely someone who has some life experiences I wish to share. I will always advise you to seek professional advice from your accountant or financial advisor. This blog will simply enable you to have a more educated conversation with them.

I welcome all forms of feedback, questions and comments. You can reach me at moneycanbesimple@gmail.com

I hope you enjoy reading this blog. Thank you!
